Thieves take expensive TV, sporting goods


Evidently some people couldn't wait for Black Friday.

According to Salina police reports, a 50-inch plasma TV valued at $3,000 was stolen Thursday night from a home in the 300 block of Gail Drive. A basement window was broken.

The night before $1,600 worth of sporting goods -- golf clubs, softball bats, gloves -- as well as an XM radio and an air mattress were stolen from a home in the 100 block of North Second Street.

Many were there for the emachine desktop for $199, a $420 saving.

Szelc, a medical center worker, and her accountant aunt Ocnas had chairs, a table, sleeping bags and, being electronics types, a TV to watch Grey's Anatomy.

Like many others, they had family and friends stop by with supplies.

Brenda Rodriguez, the high school worker in line behind them, had friends surprise her with an air mattress they brought up with a huge sign reading 'Brenda's Mattress Service.'

'We watch out for each other,' she said, noting that people get to know their neighbors out of necessity for those trips to the Whataburger.

Best Buy opened at 5 a.m. but about an hour before that, a phalanx of employees came out with manila envelopes filled with the 'tickets' for the door buster specials. They called out the item names and passed out these vouchers to purchase the items.

Customers were let in 20 at a time and though the store got crowded, it was an orderly and seriously focused crowd
