It took fire fighters ten minutes to put out the blaze, which started in Simon and Matthew’s shared bedroom at about 7.30pm.
Crew manager at Newbury fire station, Mike Wilson, said fire crews had thought someone was in the building but the family had escaped.
Mrs Loughnane believes the fire was started by a candle that had been left burning beside a bed in the room, eventually catching the mattress. Her son thought he had blown it out.
A neighbour who saw the fire in the upstairs bedroom banged on the door to alert the family.
Mrs Loughnane believes the family could not smell the smoke as they have fire doors in the house.
The fire brigade was called and an ambulance and police attended
