Last year, Amer launched Meditlantic Importers in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Amer brings in mattresses upholstered with Egyptian cotton and sells them to high-end hotels in the resort area. So far, she has landed contracts with two hotels to supply some 240 mattresses at an average of $750 apiece. She hopes to add more hotel clients--and eventually turn a profit--by the end of next year.
Amer began by researching Egyptian mattress manufactures and hit upon Master Bed, a Lebanese company with a factory based in Egypt. She raised some scratch from family members to buy a few mattresses, not knowing if she would be able to unload them. Luckily, she convinced some hotel managers to take a few off her hands, raising enough cash to fund her next order
